Paper at the Edge of Art
I curated a show at Jay Gallery in Seoul that opened on Sept. 7. Below is the press release and some photos of the opening.
PAPER AT THE EDGE OF ART
Jay Gallery in Insadong, Seoul, is pleased to present "Paper at the Edge of Art," a group show that runs from September 7 to 20, 2011. The opening reception is at 6p.m., Sept. 7.
While artists have used paper for centuries, only relatively recently has paper itself come to the forefront as a medium in its own right, beginning with collage at the advent of modernism.
This show places an emphasis on artwork that treats paper in an innovative way, or where the materials used on the paper are different from traditional mediums or the presentation is new or unconventional. For example, participating artist Seo Jeong-hak compresses pieces of "hanji," traditional Korean paper, into tight rolls that he then cuts into sections and arranges on a wood support in a hybrid of painting and sculpture.
Participating artists Loren Rudisuela and Seo Young put an emphasis on digital processes applied to paper, removing the "artist's hand" from the process while retaining an idiosynchratic approach to imagery and mark-making.
The remaining artists in the show are Sarah Shaw and Liz Groeschen. Shaw uses paper in her explorations of the aesthetic side of cartography, and Groeschen employs paper as the underpinning for grid arrangements of patterns using encaustics.
This exhibition was curated by Michael Anderson, an artist who lives in Seoul, with the cooperation of members of The International Artists Community in Korea.
For more information on this exhibition please contact Jay Gallery owner Lee Young-jay at 822-2666-4870 or email art.forum.asia@gmail.com. Jay Gallery is located in the SKHUB Art Center, 1-B108, Samildaero, Jongno, Seoul.
